Student Voice Project

20th Mar 2026

We are participating in a Student Voice Project in our school.

On World Children’s Day on November 20th every class looked at the United Nations Rights of the Child. We decided to look at the right of every child to be able to communicate.

People communicate in lots of different ways. Some pupils in our school cannot use their voice to communicate and they use iPads. We chose to teach LÁMH sign language to everyone in our school.

Every week the Student Council go around the classes and teach 2 new LÁMH signs. Teachers display the LÁMH signs in each classroom and they are displayed on our ‘LÁMH Sign of the Week’ noticeboard. We also revise the signs from the previous weeks. We have focused on the 13 LÁMH signs that can be used across all environments in school so that all pupils feel included. We teach children how to communicate with children that are non-verbal.

We put up posters around the school with different LÁMH signs. Some classes watched Dizzy Deliveries to learn signs. Teachers use the signs in class as well.

As part of our project every class read the book ‘Say Something’ and every pupil in the school completed an art piece for the ‘Say Something’ part of our project. The children who are non-verbal used their iPads to communicate what they wanted to say in their speech bubble. Every child in the school was included.
