Sixth Class Art

Sixth class have been studying the career of Henri Matisse, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Matisse was renowned for his expressive painting often without regard for the natural colours of the subject. Matisse’s work contained aggressive brush strokes and bold primary colours. In the 1940s, Matisse began creating cut paper collages. He called this new technique ‘painting with scissors’.

Michael Morpurgo’s novels

In 5th class we formed three groups and we read and analysed three novels simultaneously by Michael Morpurgo; The Butterfly Lion, Why the Whales Came and Kensuke’s Kingdom. Our Anti-Litter Awareness Mural Project

The Community Enterprise Sligo County Council advertised that funding was available for an anti-litter awareness project. Mrs Clarke made an initial proposal to the council and was granted the go ahead. Karen Webster a local artist was invited to guide 5th and 6th classes in creating the art mural. Irish Myths and Legends Ceramic Art

3rd & 4th class last year completed a beautiful ceramic art installation on the theme of Irish Myths and Legends with the ceramicist Rachel Quinn. Rachel recently completed a ceramic heading for the installation and this can be seen in the porch inside the front door. This really enhances the appearance of the installation and is a great addition to our school.


Litter Mural

Our new Litter Mural, completed in the first term by Rang V and Rang VI under the guidance of visual artist Karen Webster, has now been temporarily mounted in the school hall. We’ll have further information on this mural soon.


Third Class Art

We have been exploring paint and colour in Art throughout September and October. We experimented with mixing primary colours to create secondary colours and painted colour wheels to show our outcomes. On St Brigids Day 1st February the First Communion and Confirmation classes got together and made St. Brigid’s crosses. Mr. Quinn showed 6th class how to make the crosses and then 2nd class came in to the 6th class classroom and sat down. For  the last few weeks in Art we have been practising pencil drawings. We began by looking at examples of drawings and examining how shade and shadow are used to create a 3D effect. We then practised drawing spheres using the techniques studied to create depth.
