Michael Morpurgo’s novels

In 5th class we formed three groups and we read and analysed three novels simultaneously by Michael Morpurgo; The Butterfly Lion, Why the Whales Came and Kensuke’s Kingdom. We selected our favourite images, metaphors, phrases and interesting words. We explored common themes in Morpurgo’s novels, such as friendship with animals, relationship between young and old, care of the natural environment, war, overcoming obstacles, maritime life, family dilemmas, loss and adventure. As a class, we compared and contrasted themes and characters in the novels. We wrote letters and newspaper articles based on different situations in the stories.

Each group dramatized their favourite scene from the novels. We also chose a different ending to the stories we read. We did Japanese art based on the artist Hokusai from the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. We painted African art inspired by The Butterfly Lion.  We used the Poetry app on the iPods to create poems based on themes from the novels.

Here are some of our creations.
