Our latest Aistear theme in Senior Infants was ‘The Hair Salon’ and it was a big hit among the girls and boys alike! Each day there were two receptionists who were kept very busy answering the phone and writing down appointments and orders. There was also a stylist, a barber and two customers. The customers had to wait and read in the waiting area until the hairdressers were ready. They were then greeted with the offer of a magazine and a cup of tea before they had to decide over the many different hair styles they could opt for. Of course the hairdressers were kept so busy with hair dryers, straighteners, curling tongs, wigs, shampoos, conditioners, gels, moose’s, hair clips, rollers, dyes and sprays. The customers always had to remember their money bag as the receptionist would take for their new hair style afterwards and also try to sell them some of the salon products! This tied in well with the topic of money in Maths.
In the other stations during this theme the children enjoyed washing doll’s hair at Water Play, creating patterns and designs in the sand using combs and hair-brushes at Sand Play and inventing funny hair styles on paper plate faces at Junk Art. We enjoyed the story of Rapunzel who had long beautiful hair so at Construction the children build a tall castle and used dolls to act out Rapunzel’s role.
On Wednesday the 2nd of April we were visited by Molly the hairdresser and Muireann the beautician. The told us all about their jobs and answered some interesting questions. They even said they thought out hair salon was better than theirs! They were delighted when we sang our Hair song for them! Here it is…..
