Proclamation Day

DSCF5028Proclamation Day was held on Tuesday March 15th. This was a day set aside in all schools throughout the country to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising of 1916. Proclamation Day also coincided with Seachtain na Gaeilge.

We had a “Lá Glas” in the school where all of the pupils wore something green to school. The day started off in the school hall where all of the classes performed something “as Gaeilge”, either a poem or a song. The school grúpa ceoil played some traditional tunes. This was followed by some of the staff doing a surprise céilí dance for the pupils.

Afterwards all of the pupils and staff gathered in the front yard for the raising of the flag. The ceremony was performed by local man Peter Savage. Peter is a nephew of Martin Savage who fought in the GPO in the 1916 Rising and who subsequently died during the War of Independence. Peter’s grandchildren are pupils of the school. Adam, one of Peter’s grandchildren and a third class pupil in the school, wrote a blog post about Martin Savage which you can read HERE

Everybody then sang the national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann. Peter Savage’s wife then spoke to the pupils about the meaning behind the tricolour flag. Proclamation Day was a special event in the life of the school during this school year.
